Dress smart?

What is the appropriate attire for wedding dinners? My philosophy is to dress proper for I believe that dressing up properly shows respect to host. I have attended many wedding dinners but I only started taking notice of what people were wearing when I started photographing guests during my wedding assignments. It disturbs me to see some who does not dress up neatly for the function.

I am against wearing t-shirts and jeans for weddings (unless is worn over a coat). However, one particular guest I met during one of my wedding assignment - has left a significant sad impression on me till today. This guest attended the wedding in a motorcycle (from the fact that he has in his hand an old helmet). He was dressed shabbily - an old collared tee with a pants that was above his ankle. His half hanging pants was really out of place but what was even more disturbing was that he was wearing a pair of shoes where the "mouth" was wide opened. It is indeed a sad sight for I see much poverty in the dressing. He walked with much difficulty as the damage shoes were in the way. If I have a pair of shoes in my car, I would have given to him there and then.

So while I am going through a series of photos that I have taken recently where the dinner was held in a very kampung traditional style, I see a lot of casual guests and I am reminded of the old uncle with the torn shoes.
